What is the Wounded Warrior Project?

Updated on June 5, 2012

This organization serves a vital purpose and mission to those who have had life changing events resulting from serving our country in the military. It has one simple mission to foster the well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation’s history. I recently became aware of this organization through a television program and it left a positive impression. Those who serve or have served our country need our support every day and this organization among others is a blessing to those who were injured while doing the thing they loved.

The purpose of this organization is clear. It is to make the public aware of those who have been wounded while serving our country and to help those members by providing and assisting each other. They also provide unique and direct programs and services to meet these individual’s needs. Supporting wounded veterans does not stop with these individuals but it includes their families who have essentially had their lives impacted by these injuries. Each year we pay special tribute to those who serve in the military to protect us on Memorial Day but one day a year is not enough. We must thank those who put their lives on the line each day not knowing where they will serve during their enlistment. Enlistment is the key as we have an all voluntary military force unlike in the past.

The wounded warrior project has five basic core values. These include fun, integrity, loyalty, innovation and service. All our veterans deserve the support of every citizen but especially those who have been wounded. I am proud to call myself an American where there are organizations such as this to serve the needs of those who serve and have served to protect us. It is also important in these economic times that funds are there from the government to satisfy the needs of our military today and in the future.

The history of our country involves the service of individuals who have stood up to defend us from all enemies and many have made the ultimate sacrifice and for this our country can never fully repay their sacrifice. Currently we have troops all over the world in places where our military never know what will happen from one day to the next. Many serve thousands of miles away from their families and friends but they do it willingly. Our world is a different place today than in the past and individuals which this organization serves is only a small portion of what they deserve.

It is true there are differences of opinion why our military are in the places they are but we must make sure our military knows that as individuals and as a country we support them in everything they do. Our country has been through several conflicts and some are still ongoing today but whether we agree with these conflicts should not have any bearing on the support we need to show those who serve to protect us.

The wounded warrior project and other organizations like them should be recognized for what they do. Those who have been wounded who participate in supporting other wounded veterans know what it is like to go through such experiences but those who have not cannot imagine the psychological impact such an experience takes on these individuals and families. We all go through difficult times and we often have the support of family and friends. Our experiences pale in comparison to those who have been wounded while serving our country. When we see a wounded veteran or any veteran whether they are in uniform or not we need to thank them for their service.
