What is the Hall of Heroes Project?

Updated on September 25, 2012

The Hall of Heroes Project is something for which I found by accident but I am so glad I did. I am a great supporter of our military and I feel we as a country do not give those who serve to protect us get the recognition they deserve. The Hall of Heroes project is a museum but it is one which you cannot physically visit. It is a virtual museum which means it is one which you visit through your computer or any device which connects to the Internet. This does not mean that it is not worth visiting for the dedication and historical information included in this virtual museum is unlike any that I have ever seen.

Since its inception in 1998 it is now a compilation of over 25,000 pages of U.S. history to be viewed. It contains facts, stories and information. In the beginning the effort was to create a place to recognize all Medal of Honor winners but expanded to include winners of all military awards. It is a task which is daunting but one which the creators of the site felt needed to be done. In their search for information it was discovered there was no database or compilation of names who have won any military medals but that has been corrected through this site.

In an effort to due this organization and project justice I feel this article will only touch the surface. The information and resources of this project which can be found through the Home of Heroes website is unbelievable. Support for this project has come from various organizations and individuals. One such organization is the Military Times and there has been support from members of Congress.

Those who serve or have served our country throughout history deserve to be remembered and not forgotten. This site does what it does with integrity of purpose and is designed to make the information easy to find. Below is a list of some of the information that can be found on the website along with a brief explanation where needed to identify the scope of what this site and organization provides.

Profiles in Courage – this part of the website includes true stories of American Heroes not just those who received the Medal of Honor but individuals who reached beyond their limits and do the unthinkable.

Citations by state – this part of the site list the Medal of Honor recipients by state where each Medal of Honor recipient entered military service.

Tribute to Pearl Harbor – the information contained in this portion of the site is unbelievable and well worth visiting

Medal of Honor recipient web sites

Books by Medal of Honor Recipients – list books written by Medal of Honor recipients and opportunities to purchase them

Citations by War – this portion of the site provides a listing of Medal of Honor recipients by war or conflict and the branch of service.

U.S. History and information – this portion of the site provides information for a number of topics such as our flag, the national anthem, pledge of allegiance, state flags. It contains background information which as much as I can tell cannot be found anywhere else on the Internet.

Decorations 1862 – Present - this portion of the site list recipients of military medals and the conflict for which they were awarded. The names are listed alphabetically.

List of all the Presidents and their Vice-Presidents

Inaugural Speeches of U.S. Presidents

Major awards to women

Under construction is information and links to each of the 50 states – this portion is open for schools to become a part of the site in collecting information from each state including history along with a list of other pieces of information so visitors can learn all about each state. Some schools already have started projects to contribute. It is a way for students to learn not only about their state but others in our country.

As you can see the information on this site is huge and the dedication of those who keep adding information to make the site more complete should be commended. Along with those who do the work we should also recognize those organizations who have become supporters of this project. One other portion of this site provides information titled Footnotes in History which identifies when specific military events have taken place. This site is truly a blessing for all those who have relatives or friends who have served in any branch of the military since the beginning of our country.

In the beginning of this article I indicated that it would be difficult to do justice to this site and the project called Hall of Heroes. It is hoped that those individuals who read this article will be inspired to inform others of this organization and to offer support for the project. Information on how to support or the support the organization/project needs can be found within the website. I plan on visiting this site often. It is a real educational resource for the history of our country and one which our educational institutions should utilize.
