What Makes an Individual an Effective Leader?

Updated on September 21, 2011

Effective leadership is a phrase that can receive different perspectives from different individuals. Our opinions as individuals and what we perceive in the world of business can vary but certain characteristics are part of being an effective leader. Being a leader for some is not a difficult task as some have an innate talent to lead others but whether you are an effective leader is what separates individuals in the business world. Many effective leaders have been in the news in recent weeks and we are all familiar with them and what they have accomplished. Leading a group of individuals as a team leader or leading a company it is important to be effective.

Leadership is a trait needed in business today but effective leadership is one step above. It also must be realized that leadership does not exist without those who will follow a leader. Leaders basically lead the charge so to speak in reaching a goal or achieving a milestone which sometimes are created within the business community or company. Having a handle on what needs to be done and knowing how to communicate the process in getting there is part of an effective leader. Leaders must also be willing to say they made a mistake in the approach and be able to convince those involved to take the next path.

The principles of an effective leader are in many ways is a common sense attitude toward decisions. Common sense in the business world of today can be seen or the lack of it in the decisions made by businesses and individuals who impact those around them. This includes employees of organizations and families in terms of decisions made as an individual.

Leaders are needed to bring innovative ideas to take advantage of the opportunities which present themselves in a global economy. Those that are effective will be successful while those who are not will fail. This does not necessarily mean they are not leaders but there approach for whatever reason did not work. Effective leadership in many respects presents an atmosphere of respect not only for who they are but for what they have done and what they want to accomplish. This can either be for themselves or the organization/company for which they work.

Other characteristics of leaders involve being honest with those who want to follow their approach to issues for which they are responsible to resolve. Another aspect is character. This involves how an individual handles themselves in specific situations especially when it is important for their company. Many issues face businesses today and leaders who are effective help to project a positive perception to customers that their company is the one to choose for their needs. Getting the message across about what a company stands for and the principles of their operations is important in achieving success. Leaders and especially effective leaders will change the perspective of a company when times have placed them in an unfavorable light with the public and their customers.
