Are we a product of our circumstances or our decisions?

Updated on May 13, 2014

As we grow we experience circumstances some of which we can control and others we cannot. The key to surviving rough circumstances and enjoying the good ones involve the decisions we make each and every day. Events are always going to occur in our lives some of them good and some of them bad. We as individuals have choices to make each day and the decisions impact our lives not only on the day they occur but our future.

A quote by Stephen Covey states:

“I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions.”

Our live is a product of the decisions we make not the circumstances we find ourselves. Any decision has consequences not only for us but for those around us. Making can be difficult but making the right decisions is sometimes the hardest task we will ever face. Management of businesses and organizations must make decisions affecting the organizations each day with regards to issues affecting the success of the organization. Sometimes they can affect the bottom line and sometimes they directly impact the employees who work for them.

Another quote by Charles Swindoll also makes a profound statement about decisions. He said:

“Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it.”

We as individuals can react two ways when issues surface affecting us, our family, our friends or our work. We can overreact or take steps to understand the circumstances in which we find ourselves and make decisions good. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson we are destined to become the person you decide to be. His quote is below:

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.”

Each of us has dreams but we are often not living our dreams because we are living our fears. We do not know what lies ahead of us but we need to fight our fears and live our dreams. The limitations we have are those that exist in our minds. We must use our imagination and then our possibilities become limitless. Two quotes presented below address these principles.

“Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears.”

Les Brown

“Limitations live only in our minds. But if we use our imaginations, our possibilities become limitless. –Jamie Paolinetti

The lives we have are what we make of it and what we desire will be accomplished only if we make the right decisions. Our lives go through many ups and downs but facing each situation head on will determine what others will think of us and what we will think about ourselves. The principles in the previous sentences were taken from the quotes by well recognized individuals and are provided below:

“Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be.”

Grandma Moses

“Be willing to make decisions. That’s the most important quality in a good leader

George S. Patton

There are many fine individuals who give us great insight to us as individuals we only need to know what they are so we can apply them to our lives. The quotes presented in this article and others like them point us in a direction we need to go to become the person we are intended to be and who we will become.
